Tips for Choosing Supplements for Brain Health

Tips for Choosing Supplements for Brain Health

By Dr. Linda J. Dobberstein, DC, Board Certified in Clinical Nutrition

Nootropics, SIRT activators, biohacking, oh my! Choosing supplements to support brain health can be confusing as there is so much to choose from and consider. Here are some tips to help you find the best supplements for your needs.

Foundational Support

Foundational support for brain health includes sleep, diet, and general needs. Use this as your platform for choosing a product first and then add things based on your health priorities and needs.

1. Sleep: Do you consistently get 7-8 hours of quality restorative sleep? If not, then work on sleep support. Sleep is critical for your brain to do its repair work.

Customer favorites for basic sleep support include RelaxaMag and Sleep Helper. More in-depth support may include PEA Ultra, TriCal, and more.

2. Diet Quality and Needs: Do you consume a whole foods diet 85-90% of the time? Are you on a restrictive or nutrient poor diet, i.e. gluten-free, plant-based, FODMAP, keto-diet, or Western diet etc.? Quantity of vegetables or fruits? Do you consume fish?

Mealtimes aren’t always perfect to get everything in that you need. Consider support such as Daily Energy Multiple Vitamin, Daily Protector Eye & Immune, and Daily DHA to help supplement dietary shortfalls. For convenience and comprehensive support choose the Daily Super Pack.

3. Exercise: Engage in 150-180 minutes of exercise per week. The best exercise is the one that you consistently do and enjoy!

4. If you are doing great with these factors and want to optimize brain health and sharpen memory during your busy day, consider PhosphatidylSerine (PS) and Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALC). Take 1-2 caps/day of one or both products.

• PS is a special fat for your brain that helps all neurotransmitters function and mood. Omega-3 fish oil DHA and PS work synergistically.

• ALC is an amino acid that metabolically converts into the memory neurotransmitter. It also supports burning of fats and blood sugar to produce mitochondrial energy and much more.

Moderate Support

If you need more than foundational support, here are some resources to help. Extra support may be used if you feel like multi-tasking and meeting demands is not as easy as it used to be. Perhaps you have noticed memory blips, brain fog, or simply feeling mentally drained at the end of the day.

Consider support such as Brain Protector and Super Brain Booster. Take one or two capsules per day of each product. The goal is to see positive changes in how you get through your day.

• Brain Protector provides a blend of antioxidants that can cross the blood brain barrier. These nutrients protect nerves, mitochondria, microglial cells and other tissues from oxidative stress and wear-and-tear. It may assist with brain fog, brain fatigue, sensory overload, and more in-depth challenges.

• Super Brain Booster is a blend of key nutrients that supports memory and focus neurotransmitters. It aids short- and long-term memory, word finding, cognitive agility, and mental sharpness.

Significant Support

There are times when you need more intensive support for brain health. PEA Ultra, Fisetin, and Pterostilbene may be added to any of the supplement plans above. Click on the articles below to learn more!

Specialty Support

Sport

Consider supplements such as Brain Protector, Daily DHA, PhosphatidylSerine, PEA Ultra, and RelaxaMag to help protect and aid nerves from the stress and risks of the game. These products can be taken with other supplements as desired or at higher doses for in-depth support.

• PEA Effective for Exercise Recovery and Athletes

Toxins and Mold in the Environment

School buildings, work, and home environments contain many different chemical compounds, dust, molds, and other particles that pollute the air you breathe. Another stressor is anesthesia. These compounds can contribute to foggy thinking, fatigue, mood stress, and other brain symptoms but are often overlooked. Consider support such as PEA Ultra, Astaxanthin, Grape Seed Extract or PterostilbeneGlutathione Ultra, and/or Daily Detoxify.

Healthy Aging

The “fountain of youth” has been sought after for centuries by explorers. Sirtuin activators found naturally in various plants are anti-aging nutrients. These compounds support many different tissues and mechanisms throughout your brain and body. Pterostilbene and Fisetin are two of these remarkable, SIRT-1 activators.
